On Friday 8 May, the first encounter of this year’s 4 Cubes backgammon interclub tournament in Belgium was played. Both teams agreed to meet at the Sandeman club in Ghent.
4 Cubes featured a clash between 4 Cubes Antwerp and 4 Cubes Bruges.
Antwerp fielded Inge, Kris, Rachid, and Hasan, while Bruges was represented by Line, Yannick, Joseph, and Christian.
After the first round, the score was tied at 2–2, leaving everything still possible.
In the second round, Antwerp gained the upper hand by winning three out of four matches. This gave Antwerp a 5–3 lead going into the third and final round.
Bruges therefore needed to win at least three of the four matches in the last round to stay in contention. Unfortunately for Bruges, the round ended in a draw. Kris Claeys delivered an outstanding performance by winning all three of his games.

Oct 23 , Bierbeek, Belgium — If you hear a Gent player at the start of the third round in the 4 Cubes say, “If we go all out now and win all four matches, we’ll be allowed to play a play-off,” you can feel the sparks of ambition flying, but if it’s Johan H, then you also know he’s already calculated the odds of victory in exact percentages. At the home base of Sonja and Michel in Bierbeek, the Leuven team felt invincible, but what was that again about the bear’s skin?
On Tuesday 22nd October, eight backgammon players battled it out over twelve matches. Four players from Gent against four from Brussel Black Beard Backgammon (BBBB), each playing three rounds to 7 points. Location: Union Sandeman, home of the Gent Backgammon club. At stake: to gain the opportunity to challenge the current 4 Cubes holder, Brussels.
From Gent, Geert, Bert, Firat and Alf were summoned to face off Maurits, Daniel, Vincent and Hubert from BBBB.
The Brussel Black Beard Backgammon team went off for a good start, winning 3 out of 4 matches. Only captain Bert managed to eke out a double match point (DMP) win against Daniel.
Round two was for Gent, 3-1, with only Maurits managing a win over Alf. So it became 4-4 and everything remained to be played for in the third and final round.

Geert and Bert finished their matches first, both winning. Then Maurits mistakenly forgot to hit Firat’s checker while entering from the bar but realized it only after he pressed his clock—it was a legal move without hitting. At DMP this proved fatal and Firat took the win and the 7th victory point for Gent! Daniel won his match but this was not enough to keep Gent from winning from BBBB with a narrow 7-5.
Now Gent is in the position to challenge Brussels to regain the 4 Cubes trophy after a year of absence from its usual location 😉
In 2024, four teams compete for the 4 Cubes 2024 trophy: Brussels (champion 2023, captain Guy Van Middelem), Gent (captain: Bert Van Kerckhove), Leuven (captain: Johan Segers), and Black Beard BG Brussels, aka BBBB (captain: Daniel Rozenberg).
On Sunday, September 22, today, the duel between Leuven and BBBB took place in Sport & Squash Club De Vaart (Wilsele). Each team fielded 4 players. Three rounds of in total twelve 7-point matches were to decide which team would qualify for the duel against Gent, runner-up of 2023. In case of a 6-6 draw, a 5-point team consultation match would serve to break the tie.

After round 1, BBBB took the lead, 3-1. In rounds 2 and 3, Leuven fought hard to catch up, but to no avail, BBBB drawing each of the two rounds 2-2. Leuven vs BBBB ended therefore at 5-7, BBBB winning the confrontation. Congratulations!
The next step in the 4 Cubes 2024 competition is the duel between Gent, with home advantage, vs BBBB. At stake: a chance to challenge the 2023 champion, Brussels. Good luck to all and may the best team win!
As decided on BGFed.be’s General Assembly of Friday, June 7, teams that wish to register for the 4 Cubes 2024 team competition are requested to register via the following online form:
Registration deadline: June 30, 2024. Registration fee: 25 euro per team.
Each team consists of 5 to 8 players.
All players need to come from the same club affiliated to BGFed.be.
One player acts as captain.
A club can send multiple teams, but each player can only join a single team.
In the likely event that the competition will consist of three rounds, the calendar is as follows: Round 1 to be played by September 30; Round 2 by November 30; Round 3 by January 31, 2025. Teams commit themselves to respect these deadlines and to exhibit sufficient flexibility in finding a date and location.
A duel between two teams will consist of three rounds of four 7-point matches, giving 12 matches in total. In case of a 6-6 draw, a 5-point team consultation match will decide the outcome.
The exact tournament format will be decided once the teams are known, taking into account the results of 4 Cubes 2023 (champion: Brussels; finalist: Ghent; semi-finalist: Leuven).

In the wake of their thrilling semi-final victory against Leuven in Spring, the Brussels team, led by captain Guy Van Middelem and featuring Kristoffer De Weert, Ithzak Solsky, Paul van Dijke, and Paulus van Rooijen, had their sights set on redemption. They were determined to avenge their heartbreaking loss in the previous year’s final against Ghent and secure their club’s first-ever championship trophy.
However, their opponents from Ghent, led by captain Geert Van der Stricht and comprising Robin Bilderbeek, Johan Huyck, Marc van Damme, and Bert Van Kerckhove, were no pushovers. With most of them representing our national BGFed.be Red Beavers team, they were the heavy favorites.
The duel took place on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, in the beautiful Sandeman clubhouse in Ghent. The tone was set in the initial round of the duel, where Brussels found themselves trailing 4-1 in a race to 8 points. At this point, it appeared as though a one-sided contest was on the horizon, with the prospect of a quick exit back home looming over Brussels. But in true Brussels fashion, their indomitable fighting spirit kicked in, and they managed to level the score at 5-5 after the second round.
The pivotal decider round, Round 3, would determine the fate of the championship. Guy and Paul secured relatively comfortable victories, yielding a Brussels advantage of 5-7, with only one point needed. However, Paulus and Ithzak faced tough opposition, resulting in a 7-7 draw. The fate of the championship came down to the clash between Kristoffer and Bert.
For a moment, the outlook appeared uncertain for Brussels, but momentum swung in their favor at just the right time. Kristoffer, battling the clock, fought valiantly and clinched the match with a 7-4 score. With a hard-fought 7-8 victory, Brussels seized the coveted trophy, and the celebrations during the after-party lasted well into the night.

Today, Sunday, March 5, Brussels received Leuven in a duel for the right to challenge Gent, holder of the 4 Cubes since 2019. Play took place in one of the bridge rooms of the Royal Orée in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe. Brussels had fielded a strong team: Ithzak Solsky, Kristoffer De Weert, Paulus van Rooijen and Johan Brisaert. But Leuven had sent its rating top as well: Michel Lamote, Toon Van Herreweghen, Ronny Conaert, Johan Segers and Sonja Custers. Fifteen 7-point matches, in three rounds of five, would determine the outcome.
In Round 1, Leuven took a small 3-2 lead. But in Round 2, Brussels struck back, winning 4 matches out of 5. The score after two rounds was therefore 6-4 to Brussels’ advantage, meaning that 2 victories in Round 3 were already enough for them to win the majority of the 15 matches.
And so they did, with even one match to spare: 3-2 for Brussels in the last round, and thus 9-6 for them in total, a convincing victory. This means that last year’s Gent-Brussels final will be repeated sometime in the fall.
Will Gent confirm its title as Belgium’s Best Backgammon Club one more year or will Brussels succeed this time to snatch the trophy home?
On Tuesday evening, October 25, 2022, challenger Brussels took up the gauntlet and traveled to Ghent, eager to earn the 4 Cubes which stayed there during the covid period. The final encounter the 4 Cubes 2022, Belgium’s backgammon interclub championship took place in the well known Sandeman, where all of the Ghent Backgammon activities have taken place since many years. In July this year, Brussels had narrowly defeated Leuven (report) to decide who would become Ghent’s challenger, Ghent holding the trophy since 2019 already.
Brussels’ line-up could have been stronger, but with Kristoffer De Weert, Paul Van Dijke, Guy Van Middelem, Alain Chif and Vincent Hubert, it was soon clear that everything could happen that evening. Ghent’s line-up wasn’t the strongest possible either, missing Marc Van Damme, who couldn’t find any motivation this year. This meant that, according to the BGFed rating, it was a close call to claim a favorite that evening. Ghent decided to line up their most experienced players Geert Van der Stricht, Johan Huyck, Robin Bilderbeek, Bert Van Kerckhove and Nick De Ruyck. Firat Tekil, Zeki Dogustan and Alf Martijn were available as potential substitutes but gave priority to mental support the whole evening.
In the first round, things started badly for Ghent. At one point Brussels was leading 1-3, after which yours truly could limit the damage: 2-3.

So 5-5 after 2 rounds, with 5 more matches to
play. Luckily for the home players, Ghent won the first match, where
an 8-cube in the first game was decisive. Nick De Ruyck was happy to
bring an important point home. Robin Bilderbeek, always motivated to
play for the team, added the second point, beating Alain Chif. Things
were looking very bad for Brussels at this point, trailing in all
remaining matches.
Around midnight, the match Bert Van Kerckhove – Vincent Hubert attracted most attention, as the match was about to end.
Bert Van Kerckhove was the match winner after all, when he managed to win from a scary position and secured the last needed point for overall victory. The two remaining matches were no longer important but, of course, were still played till the end “for the gallery”. Johan Huyck and myself were lucky to add one more victory, smashing down Brussels by 5-0 in the last round.

The final of the 4 Cubes 2022 will be played on Tuesday, October 25, at 19:30 in the Koninklijke Union Sandeman in Ghent.
Ghent, holder of the 4 Cubes trophy since 2019, will have home advantage against Brussels, which defeated Leuven in a tight confrontation on July 1 (report).
Each team will field 5 players. These players will play 3 rounds of 7-point matches. The team with 8 (out of 15) or more victories wins the duel.
The Ghent team will consist of Geert Van der Stricht (captain), Johan Huyck, Robin Bilderbeek, Bert Van Kerckhove, Nick de Ruyck; substitute: Marc Van Damme. The Brussels team will consist of Kristoffer De Weert, Paul van Dijke, Guy Van Middelem (captain), Vincent Hubert, and Alain Chif.
As told in an earlier post, the 4 Cubes 2022 format is simplified to two encounters: first, Brussels and Leuven play to decide who can challenge the current trophy holder Ghent, and second, the winner of the Brussels-Leuven encounter will go to Ghent to play for the title.
The challenger duel between Brussels and Leuven took place on Friday, July 1, at the Sport and Squash Club De Vaart in Wilsele. Each team had fielded five players: Johan Brisaert, Kristoffer Deweert, Paul van Dijke, Paulus Van Rooijen, and BIC 2022 champion Guy Van Middelem for Brussels against Ronny Conaert, Sassan Kashanian, Luc Palmans, Johan Segers, and Toon Van Herreweghen for Leuven. Three rounds of 7-point matches, fifteen matches in total, would bring the decision, the team with eight or more victories winning the confrontation. Players of the two teams were ranked according to the most recent version of the rating list and then paired in three rounds according to the following format:
Given two teams of five players each and three rounds to play, how to make the pairings? The picture shows Toon’s elegant solution, applied in the 4 Cubes 2022 encounter between Brussels and Leuven.
After Round 1, Brussels was leading 3-2, but Leuven turned the tables in Round 2 drawing the score to 5-5. Round 3 was to bring the decision, and the suspense grew as the first four matches were divided equally among the two teams, bringing it all down to the last match, between Kristoffer and Ronny.

As if it had to be, their match culminated to a double match point game at the score of 6-6, in which a close race would bring the decision. In the end, Kristoffer rolled the better dice, clinching the much coveted victory and the challenger status for his team, Brussels. Congratulations!
As a result, Brussels will meet Ghent in the Fall of this year and fight for the title of Belgium’s Best Backgammon Club. Good luck to both teams!

In early 2020, the 4 Cubes competition for Belgian backgammon clubs had barely started when you-know-what happened and the competition had to be cancelled. Now, more than two years later, players from Brussels, Ghent, and Leuven, agreed to restart things in a lighter format.
As the trophy was won by Ghent in 2019, they are the defending champions. Brussels and Leuven compete for the right to challenge Ghent.
On Friday, July 1, Brussels and Leuven will play in Sport and Squash Club De Vaart in Wilsele. Five players of each club will line up for three rounds of 7-point matches, which is fifteen matches in total. The team with eight of more victories will win the challenge and will go to Ghent and fight for the title of Belgium’s Best Backgammon Club and the 4 Cubes. This final will be played in Ghent at a date in Autumn to be convened.
In 2023, we could continue in the same way, or, if more teams would like to join in, expand the format. Stay tuned!
Het zal niet verbazen dat het organisatiecomité besloten heeft om de 4 Cubes 2020 te annuleren. Er moeten nog 9 van de 10 matchen gespeeld worden, en in de huidige toestand is het ondenkbaar om deze wedstrijden in de nabije toekomst nog te laten plaatsvinden.
Uiteraard hopen we in 2021 deze competitie opnieuw op te starten, maar wanneer en in welke vorm kunnen we nu natuurlijk nog niet bepalen.
In deze bizarre tijden wensen we iedereen een goede gezondheid toe, en hopen dat iedereen zijn dagelijkse levenswandel op een zo normaal mogelijke wijze kan verder zetten.

As soon as we have more information about the meeting possibilities, the BIC competition will be rescheduled. By now, our expectation is to postpone all matches by +/- 3 months (for ex. the D2 qualifying round-robin to be finished in June will be rescheduled till September).

On Friday the 21st of February, in a nearly crowded tennis club ‘le Roseau’ (admittedly most of the members more interested by the football game on TV), both Brussels teams started their 4 Cubes campaign 2020 playing against each other. Brussels 1 transferred Paul van Dijke and Guy Van Middelem from Brugge, Brussels 2 welcomed newcomer Itzhak Solsky ; both teams eager to win the 4 Cubes for the Backgammon Club Brussels for the 1st time in history.
Mahir Yalçin and Alain Chif (respectively captain of Brussels 2 & 1) organised the draw for the 1st round (as the previous years, each round with 3 matches to 7-points) and they meet, Mahir emerged. Brussels 2 led 2-1 (9 encounters, first to 5 victories wins the match) with Paul crushing Riza Yalçin (BRU 2) and Itzhak winning a 4-cube last game against Guy, who missed the victory-shot at the far end.
The 2nd round saw Brussels 1 level the score to 3-3 when Guy beat Riza, Kristoffer De Weert (BRU 1) outplayed Mahir but devilish Itzhak blew Paul away.
The 3rd round was as tight as one could possibly imagine, that makes these 4 Cubes encounters so special. First, Paul had his share of luck against Mahir, Brussels 1 leading 4-3 in the overall score. Then, Alain, in front by 5 – 3 (remember, to 7), lost a double gammon against Riza, the encounter score was 4-4. Everything depended on Kristoffer & Itzhak. 0 – 2 , then 4 – 2, then 4 – 4, then 6 – 4 in favour of BRU 1.
In the Crawford game, Itzhak fought back from a nearly lost position to make it 6 – 5, DMP to come, drama at each move ! In the bear-off, the very, very, very last dice throw was a needed double 4-4 for Itzhak. What a climax for Brussels 2 and a big disappointment for Brussels 1.
That’s mind sports, folks, the atmosphere was splendid.

With 5 victories out of 5 encounters, the team of Gent has convincingly conquered the 4 Cubes 2019. Runner-up was Leuven 2, who held the 4 Cubes for three consecutive years 2016-2018.

Rounds 4 and 5 took place on Sunday, October 27, in the beautiful surroundings of the Koninklijke Academie Union-Sandeman, home of the club of Gent.
Gent’s performance was a matter of skill, not luck. In the PR competition between Gent, Brugge and Leuven 2, they came out on top with a wide margin:

Rounds 2 and 3 of the 4 Cubes 2019, Belgium’s backgammon interclub competition, took place on Sunday, May 19, in the bridge rooms of Tennis Club Orée, Sint-Pieters-Woluwe. All six participating teams were present for a day packed with 7-point matches.
The team from Gent won both its encounters and is leading with 3/3. Next comes Leuven 1 with 2/3, followed by the four remaining teams (Brugge, Brussels 1, Brussels 2, and Leuven 2, the winner of the three previous editions) with 1/3.

All six teams came together to play the last of five rounds of the 4 Cubes 2018, the team competition organized by BGFed.be. In the tennis club Longchamp in Uccle, Brussels 2 met Leuven 2, Leuven 1 met Gent, and Brugge met Brussels 1. The main area and the room upstairs were packed with backgammon sets, some cheap and some luxury, clocks, and recording equipment. Players from all over the country (and even from across the border) enjoyed an evening of playing and camaraderie, until the late hours.
The encounter between Brussels 2 and Leuven 2 was the de facto final of the competition: the winner of the encounter would be first in the final ranking and earn the right to hold and display the precious 4 Cubes trophy throughout 2019. Around midnight, it was Leuven 2 that came out on top. Congratulations for the team, who already won the 2016 and 2017 editions. Full results can be found in the Tournament Book.
We would like to thank all players and team captains for their participation, sportsmanship, and fair play. Fixing dates and motivating players was not always an easy task, but some team captains showed remarkable patience and gentlemanship. The organizing committee has listened carefully to the feedback and suggestions formulated by the captains and will soon come up with a proposal for the 2019 edition.
The 4 Cubes is Belgium’s backgammon interclub competition. This year, six teams are competing for the trophy. All enounters up to round 3 have now been played, and Leuven Cubers 2, winner of the competition in 2016 and 2017, is the only team that remains undefeated. Full details in the tournament book.
After a summer break, rounds 4 and 5 will be played in September to November. It would be fantastic if all encounters of the fifth and final round could be played on the same time and location, for instance on Friday, November 16, in Brussels, for a thrilling final !
The Four Cubes encounter between Gent and Brugge was validated as a BMS-event after both TC’s ( = Team Captains), Geert Van der Stricht (Gent) and Guy Van Middelem (Brugge),agreed to record and transcribe all 9 matches. The players had all the matches transcribed within 48 hours and Johan Huyck re-analysed the matches and processed the data within a day.

These PR’s show that it is not easy to play well after a hard day’s work and that it is difficult to achieve a below-10 PR in cube handling. Johan H. and myself were the exceptions.
I also campaigned in Gibraltar. I got off to a bad start in the 11-pointers (1/4), but managed to string 3 wins together in the Consolation (9-point matches). I filmed all my matches and came up with this encourageing result :
On Friday, June 16, the Brussels team went to Leuven for the annual 4 Cubes encounter. The Bxl team consisted of a Francophone and a Neerlandophone Bruxellois, a Hungarian and a Dutchman (they left the Greek at home). The home team was a Francophone Iranian, a Frenchman and two Flemish (one of whom is a prof @LLN). Great atmosphere, interesting games. Better, the result was 6-6 – a thriller.
