Guy lost as well, but Geert and Michel won. The team from Latvia turned out to be very strong. Belgium – Latvia 2-2.
JohanMemberJust lost my match… I didn’t play badly (“Expert”), but my opponent played better (“World Class”) and moreover had the dice on her side. Better luck, I hope, for Geert, Guy, and Michel!
JohanMemberMichel defeats Raj Jansari, Belgium vs UK ends in a draw, 2-2. A fine match by both players, and near the end Michel got a bit lucky, leading 7-5, accepting a (too) early cube, and winning a gammon after a volatile hitting contest.
JohanMemberMixed emotions: despite an initial 8-1 lead, Geert loses from Rick Janowski, who plays at world class level. But I manage to win against Gaz Owen; we both play well, and I’m the more lucky one… Belgium vs UK: 1-2. Michel Lamote still has to play, against BG Giant Raj Jansari, in an attempt to save the draw and secure a precious point…
JohanMemberGuy Van Middelem loses to Simon Barget, who played better and was more lucky as well. Nothing to do about it, except for working and studying harder… Geert Van der Stricht will play on Monday evening; his opponent: Rick Janowski…
JohanMemberGeert and I both won our matches: Belgium vs Panama 3-1.
Geert played an excellent match. In combination with Geert’s lucky dice, his opponent had no chance: 11-0.
My own match was a blunder party, but fortunately my opponent made even many more blunders than I did. Trailing during the whole match, the first time I managed to pass by was at double match point — right on time!
JohanMemberMichel wins, but Guy loses, Belgium vs Panama 1-1 so far. Level of play is less high than in the previous rounds against Germany and the USA. Geert and I still have to play, probably this weekend.
JohanMemberWith 4 players, a confrontation would consist of 4 x 4 = 16 matches, so the result could be 8 – 8.
JohanMemberIn the mean time, both Michel and myself both lost. We played well, and our opponents even played better…
Our opponent in Round 4 is… Panama!
JohanMemberUnfortunately, Geert Van der Stricht lost against Peer Roewer, notably due to two doubled gammons. Better luck next time!
JohanMemberJeremy Bagai (USA) vs. Geert Van der Stricht 11-5, Belgium loses 1-3 against the USA. Jeremy and Geert played excellently, “World Class” versus “Expert”. The last game had a high entertainment value, with a correct 4-cube and 8-cube, both double/take, and a bunch of jokers.
JohanMemberFriday, Walter lost 8-11 against Frank Frigo, who played on world class level. Belgium vs. USA 1 – 2. Geert plays the fourth match on Wednesday.

JohanMemberGeert loses but I win! 1-1 so far. Guy and Michel still have to play.
Geert played a reasonable game, much better than his opponent in any case, but the dice left him no chances. Same thing for me, but I was the more lucky one, rolling more doubles in the double match point game…
JohanMemberGeert VdS will play tonight (Monday Sep 3) at 18:00. My own match is scheduled for 20:30.
JohanMemberI guessed the right move! But not sure I would have dared to make it…
JohanMemberThe matches played and recorded by the Belgian players can be downloaded from http://bgfed.be/2012/08/14/replay-matches-world-championship-monte-carlo-2012/
JohanMemberGeert Van der Stricht just agreed to join the team, which is now complete:
#1 Michel
#2 Geert
#3 Guy
#4 Johan (captain)
Reserve: Walter.

JohanMemberEmail by Guy Van Middelem on July 9:
HEEL fijn dit allemaal te kunnen lezen in de Var. Ik heb genoten van de uitslagen en commentaar. Het geeft een mooie indruk van de degelijkheid van backgammon in België. Blijven schrijven en presteren, jongens !

JohanMemberUpdage on gammonmanager.com: Matvey “Falafel” Natanzon defeats Philip Vischjager in the round of 32. The only Dutch man is eliminated from the main tournament.
JohanMemberEmail by Maurits Pino, Monday, July 9, at 10:01 AM:
If you like to follow Monte Carlo, please look at this.
Geert Van der Stricht made it to the final 16 – Good luck!!!!
NB: Luc Palmans was eliminated in the round of 32. Philip Vischjager’s result against Falafel still isn’t on from that round.JohanMemberSMS by Geert Van der Stricht on Sunday, July 8, 02:50 AM:
“Luc en ik ook door naar de 3de ronde! Het is 3u en nu pas klaar! Ik heb zelf, bij double match point een direct shot voor de match overleefd!”
JohanMemberSMS by Geert Van der Stricht on Saturday, July 7, 20:30:
“Dag Johan. In de eerste ronde hebben Luc en ik het overleefd en zijn Walter en Michel helaas gesneuveld! Ik hield eraan je te informeren van zodra ik kan. Straks om 22u de tweede ronde. Groeten, Geert”
JohanMemberBelow please find an email by Geert Van der Stricht on Saturday morning, July 7. In short, Geert won a quarter entree on Friday evening. Congratulations, Geert!
Groeten, Geert”
JohanMemberOr will Michel become Belgium’s Serguey Bubka, breaking his own record every other day?
JohanMemberToon’s analysis also shows that for money, the position (each player having 2 checkers on the deuce point) is indeed an initial double. But is it also a redouble? If the player on roll decides not to double, then in case he misses, he takes away his opponent’s powerful redouble.
JohanMemberTest succeeded! You’re welcome. Thanks for the suggestions! Implemented. Looking forward to new posts.
