  • Brussels Backgammon Wednesday to Start at 7pm

    Again we had a lot of fun playing backgammon yesterday (March 16, 2022) at Au Bassin in Brussels (Baksteenkaai 74 Quai Aux Briques).

    In order to go home not too late, the next sessions will begin at 19.00h. No worries if you can’t make it exactly on time. Players arriving later can start a new match as soon as a player becomes available.

    Free participation. No registration required. Everybody welcome. Next session: Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

  • Successful Kick-off for Brussels Backgammon on Wednesday

    After the forced sanitary break, the re-start of the weekly Brussels backgammon evenings last Wednesday, March 9, was a great success: 10 players showed up, of which 5 new members. In the stylish setting of the Au Bassin, the sound of dice and checkers rolling and shuffling on backgammon boards could be heard. Organizers Chantal and Vincent ensured everybody felt welcome and had opponents to play with. The bartenders were enthusiastic about this new presence in their bar and look forward to hosting many more such events.

    Next meeting: Wednesday, March 16, at 20:00h, Au Bassin, Baksteenkaai 74 Quai Aux Briques, 1000 Brussels. Free participation, no registration required, just show up in time. Please bring your own board if you have one, but no worries if you don’t. Results of matches between BGFed.be members (registration: 10 euro per year) count for the national rating list.

  • Backgammon Brussels reboots each Wednesday evening

  • Leuven Monthly, Sun Feb 20

    This Sunday, February 20, we come together in Squash Club De Vaart (Kolonel Begaultlaan 15, 3012 Wilsele) for the next Leuven Monthly tournament. Please be there at 12:45, so that playing can start at 13:00.

    We will play 5 rounds of 5-point matches, with doubling cube and clock, according to the Swiss tournament format.

    The tournament will be the second round of our Club Championship 2022. Match results of BGFed.be members will count for the national rating list.

    Participation is free. No registration required. Simply be on time. See you soon!

  • Leuven Monthly 2022

    After a forced two-year interruption, the Backgammon Club Leuven is happy to announce that the Leuven Monthly tournament series will resume in 2022. The series will also be the scene of the annual Club Championship.

    The tournaments take place monthly on Sunday afternoon from 13:00 to approximately 18:00 in Squash Club de Vaart, Kolonel Begaultlaan 15, 3012 Wilsele, and this every 3rd Sunday of the month, except for April (because of Easter) and the two Summer months:

    • Winter: Jan 16, Feb 20, Mar 20
    • Spring: Apr 10, May 15, Jun 19
    • Autumn: Sep 18, Oct 16, Nov 20
    • Play-off: Dec 18

    Dear backgammon friends,

Please stay downstairs, the playing room is only for play : no gathering, no talking, no kibitzing, no eating. The tournament organizer will call the players from downstairs after each draw. When play is finished, mask on before standing up and going immediately downstairs again. Only the play will be without mask (our view is : you meet only 5 different persons upstairs ; if you feel uncomfortable playing without a mask, don’t come).

  • BGFed.be transformed from formal non-profit organization to de facto association

    At the General Assembly of Friday, October 15, 2021, it was decided that the formal non-profit organization underlying the federation was to be dissolved and that the federation was to continue its activities as a de facto association (NL: feitelijke vereniging; FR: association de fait). The name, website, activities and all the material and immaterial resources of the NPO (tournaments, competition, rating list, membership of the World Backgammon Federation) are to be transferred to this new association, which will be managed by current president Guy Van Middelem.

  • Backgammon Club Leuven is rolling again!

    After a long break, the monthly Leuven club gatherings will resume again: Mark your calendar on Sunday September 19, October 24, and November 28, 2021, each time in Squash Club de Vaart (Wilsele), from 1pm to 6pm. Format: five 5-point matches.

    Moreover, the 12th Leuven Open will take place on Sunday November 21, 2021, in de Abdijmolen (Heverlee). Maximum 24 participants, preregistration required.

  • Leuven Open 2020 cancelled

    We’ve been thinking hard and long about this one: another venue, another tournament format, etc. But in the end we see no other option. Sometimes, it’s just better to pass than to play on and risk a gammon.

    So, for the first time since 2009, there will be no Leuven Open Backgammon this year. We hope that the 12th edition can and will take place in 2021, with the familiar ingredients that give the tournament its unique flavour.

    Thank you for your understanding. Looking forward to better times when we can roll the dice together again.

  • 4 Cubes 2020 cancelled

    Beste vrienden, ploegkapiteins,

    Het zal niet verbazen dat het organisatiecomité besloten heeft om de 4 Cubes 2020 te annuleren. Er moeten nog 9 van de 10 matchen gespeeld worden, en in de huidige toestand is het ondenkbaar om deze wedstrijden in de nabije toekomst nog te laten plaatsvinden.

    Uiteraard hopen we in 2021 deze competitie opnieuw op te starten, maar wanneer en in welke vorm kunnen we nu natuurlijk nog niet bepalen.

    In deze bizarre tijden wensen we iedereen een goede gezondheid toe, en hopen dat iedereen zijn dagelijkse levenswandel op een zo normaal mogelijke wijze kan verder zetten.

    Dear backgammon friends and/or Backgammon Club Brussels members,

    For the first time since 3 months, we played live backgammon again with Brussels Friendly 99 on Friday the 3rd of July, 16 participants.

    Guy won 4 out of 4. Chantal, Ithzak, Johan B. & Kristoffer follow with 3 victories.

    Please, take a look at the July standings, after 4 rounds of the Brussels Friendly 2020 Championship ; note the performances from Alf & Johan B. (2x), Almira, Liliane & Lizbeth.

    Next round : Brussels Friendly 100, on the 7th of August. The Championship (11 rounds) is extended till February or March 2021.

  • BIC 2020 continuation

    Dear backgammon friends and/or BGFed.be BIC 2020 participants,

    For the first time since +/- 4 months, we played live backgammon again with Brussels Friendly 99 on Friday the 3rd of July. With 16 participants and all the respect needed due to the strict Horeca-conditions security measures.

    So, we can continue BIC 2020 again. Deadlines have been postponed for about 3-4 months. Expectation is to finish the D1 round-robin in December and the D2 groups A & B in September. Then the D2 group C can play till December. The BIC 2020 play-offs will be played from January till the end of March 2021.

  • Tournaments etc. postponed/cancelled (2)

    Due to the measures to limit the propagation of the COVID-19 virus, the following live backgammon activities are postponed or cancelled:

    • Leuven Monthly (Friday, April 24)
    • 4 Cubes rounds 2 & 3 (Sunday, April 26)
    • Brussels Friendly 100 (Friday, May 1)

    As soon as we have more information about the meeting possibilities, the BIC competition will be rescheduled. By now, our expectation is to postpone all matches by +/- 3 months (for ex. the D2 qualifying round-robin to be finished in June will be rescheduled till September).

    Online matches still valid for the rating list (see earlier post).

  • Online matches temporarily valid for rating list

    Because of the current restrictions to limit the propogation of the corona virus, live backgammon events are currently impossible.

    For as long as the restrictions are in force, it is therefore allowed and even encouraged to register the results of online matches for the BGFed.be rating list. Currently, this possibility is granted for matches played up to and including April 19.

    Conditions

    • Both players need to agree beforehand that the match will count for the rating.
    • A maximum of 50 match points per player per week can be registered. Weeks start on Mondays.
    • As before, only results of matches between BGFed.be members can be registered. See the rating list for current members.

    As far as the online environment permits, players are encouraged to simulate the circumstances of live play:

    • Hide the pipcount.
    • No computer analysis (PR) visible during the match.
    • Use of clock, for instance 2 minutes per match plus 12 seconds per move.

    How to communicate your results

    The match winner communicates the result to the rating responsible of his or her club:

    • Brugge: Pascal Vanneste
    • Brussels: Guy Van Middelem
    • Gent: Bert Van Kerckhove
    • Leuven: Johan Segers

    Results need to be communicated within a week. Please indicate clearly:

    date, match length, winner, loser, website/app/platform…

    Because of the recent measures by the Belgian federal government to limit the propagation of the corona virus, all BGFed.be backgammon tournaments and evenings are cancelled up to and including Friday, April 3, 2020. This includes:

    • Leuven Monthly (Sunday, March 22)

  • Rating list: update delayed due to technical problem

    As you may have noticed, the rating list is showing the situation of a few weeks ago. The website has moved recently to a new server, but there’s been a technical issue. We’re working on the problem. In the meantime, sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience.

  • Last roll double clinches Brussels 4 Cubes 2020 derby

    On Friday the 21st of February, in a nearly crowded tennis club ‘le Roseau’ (admittedly most of the members more interested by the football game on TV), both Brussels teams started their 4 Cubes campaign 2020 playing against each other. Brussels 1 transferred Paul van Dijke and Guy Van Middelem from Brugge, Brussels 2 welcomed newcomer Itzhak Solsky ; both teams eager to win the 4 Cubes for the Backgammon Club Brussels for the 1st time in history.

    Mahir Yalçin and Alain Chif (respectively captain of Brussels 2 & 1) organised the draw for the 1st round (as the previous years, each round with 3 matches to 7-points) and they meet, Mahir emerged. Brussels 2 led 2-1 (9 encounters, first to 5 victories wins the match) with Paul crushing Riza Yalçin (BRU 2) and Itzhak winning a 4-cube last game against Guy, who missed the victory-shot at the far end.

    The 2nd round saw Brussels 1 level the score to 3-3 when Guy beat Riza, Kristoffer De Weert (BRU 1) outplayed Mahir but devilish Itzhak blew Paul away.

    The 3rd round was as tight as one could possibly imagine, that makes these 4 Cubes encounters so special. First, Paul had his share of luck against Mahir, Brussels 1 leading 4-3 in the overall score. Then, Alain, in front by 5 – 3 (remember, to 7), lost a double gammon against Riza, the encounter score was 4-4. Everything depended on Kristoffer & Itzhak. 0 – 2 , then 4 – 2, then 4 – 4, then 6 – 4 in favour of BRU 1.

    In the Crawford game, Itzhak fought back from a nearly lost position to make it 6 – 5, DMP to come, drama at each move ! In the bear-off, the very, very, very last dice throw was a needed double 4-4 for Itzhak. What a climax for Brussels 2 and a big disappointment for Brussels 1.

    That’s mind sports, folks, the atmosphere was splendid.

  • Gibraltar Backgammon Championship 2020: Live Commentary by Michel Lamote assisted by International Grandmasters

    Last week, Michel Lamote was invited by the Danish Backgammon Federation to give commentary at their live stream at the Gibraltar Backgammon Championship 2020.   • Red Beavers reach quarter finals at WBGF Team Championship 2020

    Headed by team captain Johan Huyck, the Red Beavers Alain Chif, Michel Lamote, Johan Segers and Geert Van der Stricht drove to the Grand Casino of Forges-les-Eaux (France) to participate at the 2020 edition of the WBGF Team Championship, January 7-9. Their ambition: to do better than in Budva (Montenegro, April 2019), where Belgium was eliminated by Denmark in the quarter finals.

    There were 17 countries divided in three groups. Belgium was in group B, together with Czechia, Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, and Germany. Victories against Cyprus and Russia and draws against Turkey and Germany were sufficient to reach the 2nd place in group B and a spot in the quarter final, in which Belgium met…

    … Denmark again. Michel and Johan S. lost their matches relatively quickly, but Geert and Johan H. were close to winning theirs, raising hopes for a team consultation tie-breaker. But the Danish players, which are among the world’s strongest, proved hard to beat, and at the end, the Danes prevailed on every board. They went on to win the championship, before Greece (2nd) and France (3rd).

    Belgium continued to defeat Austria but lose from the UK, ending 6th, one place better than in 2019.

    The 2021 edition will take place in Trier, Germany. Can we do better still?

  • Vlissingen Masters Rapid and Speed

    At the occasion of 60th birthday, Paul van Rooijen organised a great backgammon weekend in the Arion hotel at the waterfront of his home town, Vlissingen, on 4 and 5 January 2020.

    There were two tournaments, in Swiss format, with finals between the top-2 to determine the winner:

    • A Rapidgammon tournament on Saturday: 7-point matches, Bronstein timing with 5 minutes for the match plus 11 seconds per move;
    • A Speedgammon tournament on Sunday: 5-point matches, Bronstein timing with 2 minutes for the match plus 10 seconds per move.

    The tournaments also counted as the Belgian and Dutch rapid and speed championships, with BGFed.be offering the belgian trophies. Congratulations to the winners, Geert Van der Stricht (rapid) and Toon Van Herrweghen (speed). Toon also won the Open Championship of the speedgammon tournament.

    Our desires, of course, include your best of luck with all sorts of doubles in the beginning of the game and mainly doubles 5 & 6 in the bear-off.

    Besides BIC & 4 Cubes, BGFed.be tournaments include :

    Leuven Monthly (http://backgammon-leuven.be/), organized in de Squash Club de Vaart (Wilsele) on Sunday afternoons and Friday evenings

    Brussels Friendly, organized in Tennis Club le Roseau (Uccle) on every 1st Friday evening of the month (starting with 03/01/20)   

    Bigger day tournaments in Ghent (around March/April), in Brussels (the 1st of May) & in Leuven (around November)

    The 5th international BMAB – BMS tournament in Ghent (presumably the last weekend of December)

    We’ll meet on all these occasions and you can improve your rating (which changes every week).
