Belgian Backgammon Ratings (2005-2013): From Spreadsheet to Web Application

Download the report (*.pdf): Belgian Backgammon Ratings (2005-2013).

Apart from an introduction in Chapter 1, the content of the report is as follows:

  • Chapter 2 traces the evolution of the rating list over the years. It tells us about the growth of the Belgian backgammon community, which took off sharply in 2009. Moreover, we can trace the increase of the rating record and we get to know some fun facts, such as the biggest upsets (least probable victories) and the longest winning streak.
  • The rating lists are collected in Chapter 3. Apart from the actual rating list as of December 31, 2013, for all 172 players ever registered in Bigelo, there are also some partial lists. Ratings are calculated for each year from 2005 up to 2013 separately, incorporating only the matches played in that year. Furthermore, ratings are calculated for each match length 1, 3, …, 15 separately. We learn that the performance of players can vary strongly over different match lengths.
  • Finally, the rating formula and some technical details are explained in a technical appendix.
